Eye Opening Nepal

The level of development here has been a shock to the group. The power goes out, there is not always hot water, the internet works for a few minutes at a time and water is pumped from makeshift wells. There is rubbish lining the streets and goats being skinned on the roadside. It is confronting.

The other side of Nepal is the ancient temples and stupas built in the 1200s. We visited the Swayambhunath Temple yesterday - an amazing stucture with both Bhuddist and Hindu worship areas. We also attended a Dharma meditation teaching this morning at the White Monestary in Bhouda.

After our meditation we went to do some volunteer work at Ghar Situ Mutu Women's and Children's Refuge. It means home of the heart. We met the centre's manager Beverley, a British lady who lives in New York but spends 20 weeks a year being 'mummy' at the refuge. She fundraises in NYC and manages to school and care for about 30 children. She is working with Rotary to purchase a soy milk machine and some a generator.
